With the price of lettuce at $12 in some cities, healthy eating is becoming more challenging for individuals and families. It's not just supermarkets that are feeling the burden of price changes, but cafes are feeling it too with some items being removed from menus and food & drinks prices also increasing...
Anyone noticed their coffee order is more? I know my favourite soy cappuccino with caramel is nearly a whopping $7 at some cafes!! Eeek...
With news that prices
of food are going to continue to rise, how on earth do we eat healthy without breaking the bank???
It's time to get creative! Here are my 4 TOP TIPS to eating healthy on budget...
1. Go Frozen
Fact: frozen fruit and veggies are JUST as nutritious as fresh! Why? Frozen produce is harvested at the peak of the season which means they're packed full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and freezing "locks in" many of their nutrients. Plus they'll keep for longer!
1kg bag of Woolworths Winter Veg is currently $3.30 (the same price
as one head of broccoli!)
2. Buy generic brands
Generic brands like home brand, Coles and Woolworths are up to 30% cheaper than name brands. They are often the same quality too!
3. Include more plant proteins
Reducing our meat consumption for more plant protein won't just save money, but also benefit our health! Foods like tofu, tempeh, tinned lentils, chickpeas, and black beans are high in fibre which can improve our gut health, lower the risk of heart disease and cancer, and assist with weight management. What can't plants do?!
150g firm tofu = $1.20 VS 100g beef rump = $4.00
(both yieldin
g 20-25g protein)
4. Plan your meals & shop online
This is the most important!
I suggest spending 30min each week to plan your meals for the week, write a list, and grocery shop online (e.g. Click & Collect). Shopping online will allow you to stick within your budget and purchase the weekly specials.
This will also save time going to the shops multiple times during the week and also help you to stay o
n track with your health and fitness goals!
